How to Get a Diagnostic Assessment

Extra People to Go to for Support

Other than your family doctor or pediatrician, there are extra people that you can go to for support.

Services for People with a Physical or Intellectual Disability or ASD

Different kinds of services such as:

  • Support and guidance for carrying out life habits

    • Takes place in the homes of individuals receiving the service

  • Development or recovery of life habits

    • Results in a reduction of disabilities and barriers

Autism Funding

Below are some general steps to follow to help you navigate the funding process for autism much easier.

Family Support Program

After getting a diagnosis of autism, contact your Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) or Intergrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS) to see if you are eligible for the Family Support Program.

Your CISSS or CIUSSS will guide you through the signup process.

The funding you receive is for you to acquire respite services such as:

  • Childcare

  • Occasional assistance

  • Assistance with daily activities

The annual funding you are eligible to receive is based on the annual evaluation of the needs of your child.

You must regularly provide proof of receipts describing how the funding was spent.

Supplement for Handicapped Children Program

Another way to access funding is through the Supplement for Handicapped Children program.

To receive this funding, you must be eligible for Family Allowance.

Several documents/information must be provided to apply for this funding:

  • The application for the supplement for handicapped children

  • School Achievement Report (page 7 of the Parent’s part of the form) to be filled out by a school or daycare official

  • Complete assessment report that led to the diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder

  • Depending on the specialists seen, the most recent results of an assessment by a psychologist, neuropsychologist, child psychiatrist, speech therapist, occupational therapist or physiotherapist

The amount of funding you get is fixed and non-taxable, regardless of the severity of your child’s disability.

Building a Support Team

After you receive funding from the Supplement for Handicapped Children Program, use it to build a support team.

Your support team may include:

Behaviour Consultants (BC)

  • Assess child development and behaviour

  • Design and implement a behaviour plan of intervention

  • Coach parents

Care Providers

  • Provide medical care/treatments

Educators/Tutors

  • Assist in the learning and knowledge intake of the child

  • Aid the child in following provided instructions

Health Professionals

  • Will be of assistance when concerns relating to the health of the child come up

Social Workers

  • Work with the child to enhance overall well-being

  • Help the child meet basic and complex needs

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP)

Support Workers

  • Work with the child directly

  • Promote independence and wellbeing

  • Provide direct physical help when called for

Therapists

  • Work directly with the child

  • Practice skills with the child

  • Work towards individual goals with the child

  • Find autism therapists
